THE BOOK

"The Physics of Sunset" is set in the '90s Berkeley, where recent divorcee poet Anna has an affair with married architect Alec. The chemistry between them seems as sound as the Physics of nature, until Alec's wife Gina invites Anna to lunch and under the clever disguise of stories of Nuban tribeswomen, makes it clear that she has no intention of letting go of Alec. Anna understands that Gina has worn and earned the years of scars of marriage and ends the affair. The last chapter is a flashback of Alec & Gina on their honeymoon, watching sunset on the beach, in anticipation of the beginning of their life together.

THE REVIEW

Only 3 out of 5 members present at the meeting finished reading the book. So as usual, we talked very little about the book, but lot more (about 4 hours worth of time) on the general topic of "sex" and "affairs." We had picked this book because Sonya had demanded that we read something more juicy and controversial as sex. Unfortunately, most of the members didn't even make it to the really juicy part halfway through the book.

About the author's writing style:

Men (Holger, Paul): It's too slow. What's the point of this book?
Women (Soyeba, Lorena, Sonya): It's all right... it's the detail that's important in a story.
Best part of the book: The lunch scene between Gina the wife and Anna the other woman. Very cool.
Confusing part in the book: The end - what really happened? And what was the symbolism of sunset?

"It seemed more to be of a book for people who enjoy reading for the sake of reading - as opposed to a book that also appeals to someone who reads to also get something else out of a book." (Holger)

The book surely led to some lively discussions, though (see below).

THE SIDE DISCUSSION

Since we mainly talked about sex (which was actually quite interesting ;-), part of the meeting minutes are deliberately omitted here, so that BARF doesn't run into the problem of this site being 'indexed'. Here are some fragments of our steamy conversation (parental discretion advised! - Don't click there if you get easily offended).
