Continuing the list of unruly books ..And again, after we decided on the book above at our last meeting, things changed once again. Below is an abstract of what lead to outlaw the book on BARF. History of events: (happened 7/20/99)Branko:Hi all BARFers, How is the reading of our book going? I must confess that I am on page 10, and will not be able to make to page 20 by the end of the week, not to mention that reading the whole book seems as likely as winning the lottery jack pot. Am I the only one, or is this a summer frenzy? What say you all? Should the meeting be postponed? ... Branko Sonya:I am having the same problem...can't seem to really get into the book at all. I do want to read it, but don't think that this weekend is a realistic deadline. Can we postpone this by a week? Like maybe do this on Aug 1 which is the next Sunday? Let me know please...if everyone else is done then I guess Branko and I will have to do a desperate read this week! By the way, I bought "The Physics of Sunset"...haven't finished that either, but I think it will be an interesting book. Let's talk about the date.... Bye, sonya Paul (I.):I'm OK with postponing the meeting for one week. It is hard to "get into" this book. in Lorena:Paul and I will be away on vacation from 7/23 until 8/2. So we were not going to make it in the first place. But we did buy the book -and it's taking us a lot of effort to go through it! If for any reason you guys want to postpone until the following weekend (8/6, 8/7, 8/8) let us know! We'll be up for it. At least after all the effort, we can participate in a discussion on the book!! Cheers! -Lorena Charlene:um... i got as far as reading the backcover of the book...in the bookstore... I think it's going to be a real chore. if everyone is having problem "getting into" the book, or getting pass page 10 (except Paul, of course!), maybe it's not us; it's the book! so at the risk of causing another rebellion, mutiny, and anarchy, may I suggest that we all relieve our selve of this burdensome chore of trying to "get into" this book, and opt for another that is easier to "get into?" How about "Physics of Sunset" instead? Aside from having a local flavor (set in Berkely), it's full of...um... exciting...discussion and descriptions of our favorite topic, written from a woman's perspective. Do I hear any seconds? --- Sonya:I will definitely second that one (especially since I have the book now). I'm still not sure how much "discussion" it will generate...I mean, you all know my lips are sealed on the topic! :-) Anyway, for something light it might be a good idea. And then we can follow up with Soyeba's idea of seeing "Eyes Wide Shut" to supplement our reading. Sounds good to me....what about everyone else? Where are Soyeba and Holger? Bye, Sonya Branko:Holger and Soyeba are away. They (read Holger) should have access to E-mail, but likely in the evenings. So I guess we'll hear from them by tomorrow. So, to summarize, the following have been proposed: 1. To postpone the meeting until the weekend of August 7/8; 2. To change the book to be read to "Physics of Sunset" It seems that Sonya, Charlene, Lorena & Paul O, Paul S, and Branko are for #1. How about #2? Besides Charlene and Sonya? #2 is OK with me. See you, Branko Paul:Are people gong to read enough of "Sunset" in one week? I guess if it's "hot" enough (pun intended).... This weekend I saw "Cancer" listed as the 50th best English-language novel, but I think it's boring. The only problem I have with changing the book is that it sure feels like Charlene is getting away with something (again)! Holger and Soyeba are on vacation, so their opinion doesn't count.(!) In summary, I agree with both items. and so on and so on ... |
